Everywhere you go, and in whatever you do, a beautiful smile is always essential. But a beautiful smile means beautiful teeth, and beautiful teeth means, of course, white shiny teeth. A bright white smile says "healthy" and, admit it, people with beautiful white teeth somehow even look happier. A whiter smile can make a person more confident and outgoing in social situations. Unfortunately most of us don't have the whitest smile that we could have. If you like coffee, red wine, and cigarettes, you surely have a problem with the color of your teeth. Teeth whitening has become the most common form of cosmetic dentistry performed.

Some people go under the knife or have injections every few months to smooth their skin, while others depend on wrinkle creams and lotions or just allow nature to take its course. Whatever the approach, anti-aging products are a multibillion-dollar industry in North America, and now some dentists are getting into the act too. A removable device called Angellift, manufactured in California, is worn inside the mouth and "gives patients another option to help them remain looking younger," said Dr. Bruno Paliani, a London, Ont., dentist who's among the first in Canada to start fitting patients.

Even if you're lucky enough to have straight teeth, there may be small imperfections, such as gaps or dingy stains, which you'd just as soon do without. With a technique called bonding, for example, your dentist can repair damaged areas by applying a "paste" made of a material called composite resin. The resin comes in a wide variety of shades. It hardens almost instantly when it's exposed to a special ultraviolet light and it can be sanded, smoothed and buffed until it exactly matches the tooth shine.

How much can a tooth be whitened? How white an individual tooth can become from bleaching and whitening is a common question. Some whitening procedures claim they can whiten your teeth by up to nine shades, but that is highly unlikely. A change of two or three shades will make a significant difference in just about anyone's smile. There is no one standard system in the dental field to measure and determine tooth color. However, the Vita shade guide is the most used. This guide divides individual tooth color into four basic shade ranges: A (reddish brown)B (reddish yellow)C (gray)D (reddish gray).

Houston Porcelain Veneers , sometimes also termed dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates, are one of cosmetic dentistry's more recent developments. These wafer-thin shells of porcelain which are bonded onto the front side of teeth can be an excellent cosmetic solution for teeth that are stained, chipped, or slightly misaligned. Porcelain Veneers are used in dental extreme makeovers in cosmetic dentistry practices everyday. Porcelain veneers are used to: close gaps in teeth, fix chipped teeth, improve a gummy smile, lengthen short teeth, and improve your overall smile.
