Dentist Abraham Ingber, DDS, says standard dental implants take up to nine months and two surgeries to complete. Today, he'll do one in less than one hour. "This is one of the most innovative breakthroughs to come along in dentistry in a long time," Dr. Ingber, of Ingber, Prestipino, Kravitz and Kristallis in Bethesda, Md., tells Ivanhoe. With a standard implant, dentists cut away gum tissue to see where to place the implant. Now at an initial visit, dentists get a 3-D image of the jaw with this machine -- the iCAT. Combined with new software, detailed images are produced.

German chemicals group BASF is set to expand the market for Lactobacillus healthy bacteria derived from yoghurt, with the introduction of a raft of products for dental health and personal hygiene. Even though in most markets products containing so-called bacteria are not able to make health claims, they are best known for their probiotic properties associated with gut and immune health.

Researchers get their teeth into artificial dental enamel Posted on August 31, 2006 An international team of researchers have finally got their teeth into making artificial dental enamel. Their work, published in the journal Advanced Materials, could lead to new tough coatings for engineering applications as well as the possibility of a natural fix for broken or rotten teeth that avoids heavy metal fillings. Researchers have chewed over how to make novel materials that mimic some of the best physical and chemical properties of natural compounds for many years.
