So in her late 30s she had metal braces cemented onto her bottom teeth for 16 months. "It was a little overwhelming at first," Solomon says. "But it's so worth it. Your smile is the first thing people notice." Solomon is part of the ever-expanding population having orthodontic work. Braces have long been a right of passage into the teenage years. But in the past 15 years the number of people undergoing treatment has steadily increased. A significant portion of that population is made up of adults. The number of adults receiving treatment increased 25 percent from 1996 to 2004, according to the American Association of Orthodontics.
