"Our findings demonstrate that red wine polyphenols have potent antioxidant properties," conclude researchers led by Dr. Fatiah Chandad from the Universite Laval in Quebec City. Her team presented its findings Friday at the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) annual meeting, in Orlando. Experts believe that upwards of 80 percent of Americans are estimated to have some form of gum disease, either in the relatively mild form known as gingivitis or in a more serious form, known as periodontitis. Periodontitis (meaning "around the tooth") is linked to poor oral hygiene.

Gum disease, known as gingivitis or periodontitis, is the leading cause of tooth loss in the country. Most of us know to brush and floss, but few people realize that gum disease may actually be a sign of other health problems, or may even cause them. Leslie Levor has had gum disease for years. But she has been trying hard to take care of her teeth. "I thought it was under control. I had used an electric toothbrush several times a day, flossing several times a day, and Listerine before I went to bed and that had been enough through the years, and then suddenly it wasn't anymore," Levor said.

You may not even know you have gum disease at the earliest stages because it causes no pain. Only "A" Dental professional can detect and begin a treatment to eliminate it. Gum disease begins early as gingivitis which is caused by the build-up of plaque on your teeth. If not removed, the plaque can develop into a hard substance called "tartar" (calculus).

What are periodontal diseases? Periodontal disease are bacterial gum infections that destroy the attachment fibers supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth. The main cause of these diseases is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. If plaque is not removed, it can turn into a hard substance called calculus in less than two days. Calculus can only be removed during a professional cleaning. If calculus forms below the gum line on the root of the tooth, it makes plaque removal more difficult, leaving you at risk for periodontal disease.

Gum disease or periodontal disease, a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue, is the major cause of about 70 percent of adult tooth loss, affecting three out of four persons at some point in their life. What causes gum disease? Bacterial plaque - a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on the teeth - is recognized as the primary cause of gum disease. Specific periodontal diseases may be associated with specific bacterial types. If plaque isn't removed each day by brushing and flossing, it hardens into a rough, porous substance called calculus (also known as tartar).

Gum Disease strikes most adults by age 35 and can ruin a beautiful smile by causing ugly receding gums. It can create extra gum tissue that requires gum surgery with significant gum removal. It is very important to have professional gum disease treatment to avoid a chronic gum infection. Gum infection treatment involves scaling and root planing and routine regular professional care. A gum infection cure depends on the cause. The best gum infection remedy is to combine good home care with professional care. The best gum infection antibiotic is usually tetracycline in order to avoid gum infection surgery.

There is quite a bit of talk going on about the antimicrobial properties of the sweetener, Xylitol, which is a product manufactured from cornstalks. The dental hygienist community (discussion groups) is where I am seeing most of this and my understanding is that it is a pretty good product as a sweetener and good for your teeth and gums. Something made me wonder, however, about going more natural, and 'honey' came to mind. I wondered about the antimicrobial properties of this natural and healthy food. What I found really surprised me!
